Abstract: Starting in 1995 as aJoint CEB/FIP Working Group on Lightweight Aggregate Concrete (LWAC), the group was after the merger of CEB and FIP attached to the new fib Commission 8 Concrete. It delivered this report as a background for an extension of the CEB/FIP Model Code 1990 (MC 90), documenting in this state-of-art report the present international consensus on LWAC, similarly to what had been done before in the field of High Strength / High Performance Concrete (compare CEB Bulletin 197 High Strength Concrete – Joint FIP/CEB State-of-the-Art Report, published in 1990). Further deliverables of the Task Group will include case studies, needed amendments and suggested extensions to MC 90, and an identification of research needs.
To allow an easy comparison with MC 90, the main headings in the present report are the same as in MC 90. First level subheadings refer to specific sections in MC 90 whereas further subheadings refer to the various documents quoted (normally North American and European (CEN) documents are quoted, supplemented by additional national documents, manuals, research papers etc. when found significant).
The approach implies that issues or clauses in different documents may have been excluded if deemed to be of less importance. Neither the list of topics nor the quotations should be expected to be complete and the original documents may have to be consulted to get full information. The authors and Commission 8 believe, however, that the present state-of-art report gives a very useful insight into the present state of codification of LWAC.
